Hey guys,

Just a quick entry today. As if the graphic novel giveaway last month wasn’t enough, there’s now even more free things you can get your mitts on if you’re lucky. The good folk at Black Library have teamed up with Fantasy Book Critic website to organise a giveaway of four sets of signed copies of my latest Ultramarines novel, The Killing Ground, and Dan Abnett’s Titanicus. How good is that? You can find out how you might win one of these fantastic books by going to:

http://fantasybookcritic.blogspot.com/2008/10/giveaway-win-signed-copies-of-dan.html

And if that wasn’t enough, BL has also joined forces with Bookspot Central to arrange a giveaway of the full set of Horus Heresy novels to two lucky winners, everything from Horus Rising to Mechanicum. Find out how by visiting:

http://www.bookspotcentral.com/2008/10/contest-warhammer-40000-horus-heresy-all-9-books-2-sets/

Not bad, eh? Have a wander over to both those sites and see how you get on. There, aren’t I good to you?

Okay, now that the free stuff’s dealt with, I’ll answer a few more of your questions. Oh, and thanks for all the good wishes about the David Gemmell Legend Award. I’ll mobilise you all closer to the time…

Gildor: Uriel’s name was chosen because I read somewhere that Uriel was the name of the angel who was given the task of guarding the gates of the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were chucked out. I liked that notion, imagining that ‘my’ Uriel, was the guardian of the Imperium, keeping it safe for when humanity was, one day, ready to inherit the Emperor’s grand dream. As to Ventris…I’ve no idea where I got that one from, though Alessio Cavatore told me once that it means ‘of the belly’ in Italian, Not sure what to make of that…

Xhalax: There was no fix, you simply had an entry that made me laugh, which is reason enough for a prize. And people have to learn that if you’re mean, then you don’t get books lent to you. Simple really. And I’ll see ye in London (on time, hopefully!). By the sound of things, you’ve got your prizes, so I hope you’re enjoying them, and be sure to let me know what you think of them.

Andy: Thankfully, I’m not chained in a basement, Misery-style, but I sometimes feel like it. I have a good-sized, three bedroom house, yet I choose to work in the smallest room in the house (no, not the toilet). Go figure…

Sam: Cheers and it’s nice to know folk are liking what I’m doing, though having looked at the names of the other entrants for the Gemmell Award…it’s some stiff competition. I have a copy of Nagash and Malekith on my ‘to read’ piles and once I finish Planet of the Warlord, I’ll be getting on to them. Funnily enough, Vince Rospond, BL’s man in the US mentioned Andrzej Sapkowski’s books when we hooked up for dinner the other night. Synchronicity at work methinks…I may have to pick them up today.

Bastiaan: Thanks for your kinds words and by the time you get to the end of The Killing Ground (the fourth in the series) I’ll have finished Courage and Honour, so there’ll be a new Ultramarines book for you to read. Hurrah! That’s incredibly flattering stuff you say and if my and the other authors’ work for the Black Library are a help in difficult times, then that’s great stuff and one of the best things anyone’s ever said to me about my books. Thank you.

In answer to your questions, I think it’s unlikely Solomon Demeter will appear again, unless there’s good reason to show him in an earlier scene that needs him there. I think it might be a bit gimmicky to have him show up in a cameo role that doesn’t need him, but, as with all things Heresy related, never say never…

As to Space Marines in Mechanicum… Originally, yeah, there was going to be a lot of Space Marine action, but as the story progressed, I realised that there shouldn’t be. It’s not their book and though there are a few bits with Space Marines in them, the Astartes aren’t front and centre. After all, it’s a book about the Martian civil war, not the fall of the Space Marines…

Right, that’s all for now, I’m off to work. Talk to you soon.

Graham.

I have to admit that I'm going to have to read them both again....simply because I was taken up with all the pretty pretty pictures (more of a compliment that it sounds, honest) to really read the stories proper and appreciate them more than getting distracted.

Though reading the Warhammer Online one made me ask one question.

Is it wrong to find Dark Elves yummy?

And I've given myself a couple of hours to get to Plaza this time around with the signing being at 3pm instead of 11am....so I don't have to be on a train at 7am either.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for the other competitions, just entered them both, i'm in a lucky mood!

For some reason the thought of you crammed in a broom cupboard trying to type on your laptop is making me smile...

I'm relegated to the smallest room in the house for my hobby too ... and i'm under strict orders not to let it get out of hand!

Andy.

Thank you very much, Graham!
That is all I wanted to know about Uriel's name.
Because in Russian pronunciation is different for different origins of the name. If a name has angelish origins it would be pronounced one way. And if a name is totally made up it would have another pronunciation...
Now the question is answered ;) Thanks again!

Thanks for the heads up on the comps. Entered the Killing Ground/Titanicus one, see if I can be lucky (again) :-)

Already read the HH series, and will no doubt get Mechanicum for xmas, so no point going for that one.

Good luck with that award aswell, Graham; you have my support!

Woo hoo!

The end is in sight....and my resistance has not faltered too much (I've entered the competition to try and win Titanicus and The Killing Ground, solely so I could read The Killing Ground and then give both books to my brother)....but I'm so so looking forward to June 2009.

The Killing Ground in paperback.

YAY!

Posting to confirm the arrival of the package :p

Many thanks Graham and tis much appreciated!

They'll see much love, well as long as I can keep my room fortified. Tis rapidly getting warmer and the spiders and other associated Aussie critters are preparing their spring offensive!

Hell, damn and blast it.

I really do have the breaking strain of a kitkat and I just can't seem to pull myself away from those accursed Elves.

I totally folded and bought Defenders of Ulthuan today.....god only know if I'll get it read before the 8th as Mr. Darkblade holds me in his sway.

Hi Graham,

well I look forward to seeing you again on the 8th, apparently I'll be in tow with my younger sibling, and attending to her wont to sprawl in doorways without the assistance of alcohol.

anyway, have just finished a stint of re-reading the Heresy books and the Mechanicum excerpt from the BL website, and you already have me intrigued about the direction of one of the characters already (Dalia), and will she be utilised on the side of humanity or the side of chaos (all will be revealed in under 2 weeks).

Seems i have set my younger sibling off on a 'pointy ears' readfest by buying her the Chronicles of Malus Darkblade, and now she has a copy of some good pointy ears, i may have to now lend her Guardian of the Forest so she has all 3 perspectives of elven behaviour, even thought i haven't read it yet!!!

as with other people, let me thank you for the competition links, i've entered the Titanicus and Killing Ground competition, and who knows i might even win it, although trying to fit any more books in my books shelves is going to prove problematic (although I have room for at least 2-3 more bookshelves in the house), AND that's not including my receipt of my whole Discworld collection from the North East eventually!!!

Anyway, i've rambled on for waaay to long already, god knows what questions, if any I'll ask you when i see you in 2 Saturdays' time, but i'll formulate something.

By the way just thought of the question, but it's so mundane, i'll ask it here: Adaric Vaanes, what is the correct pronunciation of his surname, is it 'Varnes' 'Veins' or something else?

Cheers

I very much doubt I'll ever like any of the other Elves more than the Dark Elves.

Evil is so much more fun!

Hi Graham,
I've just finished 'Mechanicum' and wanted to let you know that I think its the finest BL book i've ever read!I don't think I need to say anymore than that!!
