Afternoon folks, it’s not been that long since the last blog entry, but after yesterday’s visit to BL towers, I just had to write something. I ventured into the dark towers of BL with Dan Abnett and Jim Swallow to talk with Lindsey, Nick and Alan Merrett about what was next for the Horus Heresy. As always, it was a great fun natter, with us veering wildly along the road marked ‘Topic’ with several detours to ‘Tangent Village' and ‘Aside Town’. All of which was mighty fine fun and meant we came up with loads of very cool ideas for stories and mashed out the specifics and themes of what Dan and I plan to do next…which looks like one of the big, big events.

Much coolness was thrown back and forth, with ideas and new thoughts jostling together in new, exciting ways that got me straining at the bit to get busy on it…even though I’ve a bunch of novels to get written beforehand. Damn you, Schedule and your evil demands on my time! Suffice to say, the next project Dan and I are planning is gonna be big and if I were to mention someone with more than a superficial resemblance to Polyphemus, then I’d be saying too much…

All sorts of cool things came out of the meeting; not least of which was an idea that Jim might take on, which will be exciting if he does. Hell, I already promised him that if he didn’t do something with it, I’d fight Dan for it! It’s always fun having these brainstorming sessions, as there’s a lot of creative energy zinging about and when they collide the result’s normally something you’d never have expected or come to on your own. One of the many reasons I love coming into BL to chat to the guys there is that everyone has their own perception of an idea, and mine is always going to be different to theirs – often in very unexpected ways. When I gave BL the synopsis for Killing Ground, I went in and chatted with Nick and Lindsey about the story and in the course of the chat we came up with loads of cool ideas that weren’t in the original pitch or were new ways of looking at the story that I hadn’t considered. So whenever I’ve a book to do, I always like to go in and chat with them and see how they’ve interpreted the story and how we can work to make it even better.

So with ideas zipping about my head for my next Heresy project, even though the last one’s not yet out, I find myself sat in my usual teashop with a pot of English Breakfast and a white chocolate cookie (hey, I just gave blood, so I reckon I deserve one for being so brave!) working out the nuts and bolts for the next Uriel Ventris adventure. After the last two books of strangeness, this is going to be a balls-to-the-wall, all out action adventure story of Space Marines doing what Space Marines do better then anyone else. It’s been interesting going back to the Space Marine archetype and saying, ‘What is it about Space Marines that makes them so cool?’ I reckon it’s going to be a lot of fun to write, with lots of crowd-pleasing scenes and will, I hope, be a lot of fun to read. A return to family values if you like…so long as the family are seven-foot tall, gene-bulked super warriors…

And stay tuned for news of Games Day. After talking to Caroline at BL, it sounds like this is going to be a fantastic event, so I look forward to seeing you all there. And keep an eye out for the Mechanicum extract in the BL sampler, it’ll give you a taster of what’s to come when the book itself comes out. Oh, and we’re trying to get a signing sorted in London for the book’s release. No firm plans or dates yet, but we’re trying. I’ll let you know as soon as I know something.

On the hi-fi: Been listening to a lot of Scars on Broadway at the moment, which is very good, and I’m eagerly awaiting the arrival of the new Slipknot album.

On the reading stand: I’ve just finished 3 Para and Making a Killing, two books set in the aftermath of the fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq respectively. Both were excellent reads and filled me with admiration for the men and women who have to serve over there in harm’s way and frustration at the mistakes and awe-inspiring incompetence and naivety shown by the decision makers. I’ve just started the Peshawar Lancers, by S.M. Stirling, who writes a decent book, but who looks like someone you’d expect to have numbers under his picture.

Right, the sun is still shining, so if it hold over the weekend, I’ll be grilling meat and drinking beer in the back garden tomorrow. Hope it shines where you are.

Talk to ye soon.

Graham

All I can say is that you and Mr. Abnett are bad bad men.

Here I am, completely overexcited about Games Day being about three weeks away to the point of jumping around with joy at the mere thought of it....then then the pair of you drop this in my lap!

Although you covered it better than Mr. Abnett......though it feels like the worst kept secret in BL at this moment in time but still has me giddy with anticipation....though there better be angel chorus when I open the pages or I'll not be pleased.

I bet it's just a wind up!

Anyhoo....as to the book strangeness.....personally,I like it, I feel that in my opinion 'tis one of the definining characteristics of youe 40K novels and 'tis what I love about them....the whole 'WTF?!?!'ness. But you can't beat getting back to something like Warriors of Ultramar either!

I can't wait for Games Day now, so much so that I may spontaniously combust or something between then and now.

Good times!

And it'd be great to go back to London for the day too.

Herr Mcneil!

Its been ages since I last posted thus I've got quite a few things to tell you.

First of all I'm very proud of you that you finally finished Mechanicum. I'm sure it was a heavy literature beast to deal with.

To be honest I knew from the beginning that you'll find it hard to tackle the subject and complete the novel.

I have a 4000 word fanfic (failed entry date limit for the Planetkill Anthology) starring the Dark Mechanicum and albeit the idea was great belief me when I say I really don't know how I managed to finish the story as I had envisaged it.

This was just a 4000 words story. I can't imagine writing a 400pgs novel with a similair subject.

Although I wasn't happy with the final product. I was VERY happy that I manage to complete the story according to my synopsis and also learn a great deal about the Adeptus Mechanicus\Dark Mechanicus.

I'm also confident that we've both learnt that at times even the greatest ideas and ideas filled with the most possibilities to write about tend to give us a VERY hard time to pen down the story with the topic involved.

So again I say. Congratulations on finishing a novel with such a hard subject involved.

I've read that you're working on the next Uriel Ventris novel and HH novel.

I've haven't yet read The Killing Ground reason is I'm still eagerly waiting the PB version and now I gotta add another Ultramarine novel to the list :) I think you're quite surprised that avid readers such as I and Xhalax are patientingly waiting for the PB versions for one of our fav 40K serieses.

Its good to know you're working hard on a new HH novel. Which Dan Abnett has somewhat spoilt it to us on his blog. It seems our pleas have been answered and we shall be having the Burning of Prospero Duology. I'm also looking forward to your HH short story 'The Last Church'.

Many HH fans are getting sick at the fact that the HH series isn't continuing the storyline. Truth be told I'm VERY glad it isn't continuing the storyline.

The Civil War was so large that there are many unknown battles and facts that also had impacts on the HH civil war as a whole (Battle For The Abyss, Descent of Angels) and also adding more fluff to the mythos of the HH universe(Legion, Fulgrim).

So I say why should we just have novels depicting the Fall of Horus and the Legions that sided with him, Istvaan III and V massacres, The Burning of Prospero, The Flight of the Einsenstein and The Siege of the Emperor's Palace etc? when we all know that THERE WAS much more to that during the Horus Heresy Civil War.

Alas with every great brand you'll always have fans which bark negativity.

As a final word I'd like to ask when we shall be seing an update to your website? Its been quite a while that your bibliography has been last updated also how about some new photos. Rumour has it you've got a girlfriend :)

Anyway as always best of luck with your new literature adventures and hope you are in good health.

P.S. New Slipknot album ROX! Back to their roots, less darker than IOWA but offers quite a lot of thrashy\metal core riffs :)

Hi Graham,
Ive read a bit of S.M Stirlings stuff and the picture of him always freaks me out!! I think its the hair/ silk shirt/ Diedre Barlow glasses combo that does it...Thankfully some of his newer books have a more up to date photo..!!!

Sam - Who said anything about me waiting patiently?

I'm being, as always, decidedly impatient and bitter about all of this....but all the whining in the world isn't going to make it happen faster so I've just got to accept said fact, mope to myself and carry on reading what I have to fill in the time and stop me whining.

I'm definitely the WORST type of fan, in my personal opinion.

Xhalax - My apologies for assuming that you were waiting patiently. From the look of your words thats what I thought.

I also belief that your personal opinions regarding about what type of fan you are, are wrong.

I think you're cool for a BL fan :)

Sam - I'm not a very patient person, truth be told. I want everything and I want it three weeks ago rather than settling on NOOOOOOOOOOW!

Apparently you and Abnett are going to be writing for the Black Library...forever.
they mentioned this at Games Day Los Angeles yesterday.
Poor Nathan Long and C L Warner were shocked that they would be writing their series of books forever, they did not read the fine print. Great time had by all and just too bad you or Abnett could not be there. Any plans for next year at all, considering most of the questions were directed towards both of your works, both current and forthcoming.

Hi Graham,

I'm eagerly looking forward to your Polyphemeus-influenced work!

As a slightly tangential aside, do actually have an answer to what Torgaddon's 'joke about the bear' is in "False Gods"? I've been rereading the novel recently (and quite happily enjoying it, again!), but the small passage where Horus introduces Petronella to the Mournival made me laugh a lot.

How wrong then would it be to suppose that Torgaddon's joke is simply an elaborate extensions of this (following)?

A bear walks into a bar and says "Can I have a...
... pint please?"
The barman asks: "Why the big pause?"

Hell, damn and blast it.

Just got all but one of the first five of my HH books back from a lad I lent them too. And I opened Fulgrim to have a look at the cast list and then thought 'I'm sure reading the first couple of pages won't do me any harm.'

It did!

I'm never going to get Nagash finished before the 14th now.

*cries*

Especially after I told said lender that I'd only read the HH books once.
8/27/2008 11:09:55 PM (GMT Daylight Time, UTC+01:00)
Xhalax nobody is running after you to read ;)

Personally speaking. Fulgrim is TOO GOOD a novel. I still think its the best HH novel to date and also Mcneil's best work to date.

and I'll quote my personal opinnion of it that I had gave Mcneil a few months back.

'I FUCKING LOVED IT!!!!

I think this is your most mature and strongest novel. How you depicted Fulgrim, The Emperor's Children Legion..how you painted beautifully the characters..how you sensually and sickly degenerated them page by page...how you violently destroyed a brotherhood...but the best thing is....most of these scenes were somewhat charismastic. I don't know how to explain it but I really felt like as if Slaanesh destroyed the Legion diplomatically. The violence and astrocities comitted happened due to the Emperors Children and Remembrancers urge to try out new sensual pleasures.. Slaanesh never told them do so. Seriously dude... I wished there were more novels like this.'
Sam Spiteri
8/27/2008 11:26:39 PM (GMT Daylight Time, UTC+01:00)
Sam - I know that....but I feel bad and guilty to ask people to sign books when I haven't read any of their work.

It happened with Mr. Long, and I felt so bad I had to buy the Blackhearts omnibus as personal pennance for it.....needless to say, I suffer a lot from misplaced and needless guilt....so, since I'm not going to get anything of the Malus Darkblade omnibus my brother bought me for my 24th, and I was already about 100 pages in Nagash, I have to proceed with all due haste for no other reason than my own selfish ones so that I don't feel guilty.

But damning how brilliant Fulgrim was along the way as everyon must have a scapegoat....and my favoured on in BL books is always Mr. McNeill for nothing more than his classiness and genius.

But don't tell him I said that.

I've just discovered your writing, and look forward to reading your other books. I just finished Defenders of Ulthuan, and as I'm sure you've heard from others, it ends on one heck of a cliffhanger (which of course was no accident). Which leads to my big question: when will you complete the sequel?!

In the meantime I'm sure I'll devour the rest of your writing, as this book alone encourages me to read your other work. However, I am partial to all things elven, and particularly look forward to the conclusion of this tale.

Thanks, from a new fan.
