Hey folks,

A few things to tell you about today…

I’ll cut right to the chase of what you’re really after first though, the winners of the competition. Of the entries that were posted, the ones I liked the best or made me laugh the most were:

John: “I would love to be the winner because I've read (almost) every word you've ever wrote and can't get enough! Flattery aside, getting my hands on these glorious artefacts would certainly make me dance some sort of solo quasi-tango in the street wearing nothing but my Duff Beer slippers.”

I liked this one because of the unashamed flattery coupled with the strangeness of the image, which took quite some time to banish to the pits of things best forgotten…

Xhalax: I think you should give me some of your graphic novels as part of my scientific experience to see how many 40K/warhammer based publications it will take to break my bookshelf. 123 books so far and still no dice. BOO!

Never let it be said that I don’t help furthering the cause of science ☺

Stephen G: “By sending them to the land down under, not only do the texts experience a trip around the world (peepholes allow their unique transport experience), but will also ensure that as you sleep at night, you'll be content knowing that in the future, someone will still be enjoying your work!”

You gotta love someone who has the bloody-mindedness to work their words to exactly fifty words, as I was prone to doing during my time in Games Development when I was being warned to watch the word counts on my text. Not only that, but Stephen goes on to give mathematical proof of his right to win…

Stephen G (continued…): If you don't believe me, just look at the maths:

(((Win * Meaning of Life + the Oblige Factor) * hrs in Future) + Time loving Graham Factor + The number of Imperial Worlds ) + (Year 40K appeared + Year fantasy appeared * Chinese lucky 8) + (Current Fantasy Edition Release Date * Current 40K Edition Release Date + Win) + (Total Points of my GW products + years in hobby)

=

(((1337 * 42 + 361780) * 9) + (365 *24*60) + 1000000) + (1987 + 1983 * 8) + ((12*7)*(9*9) + 1337) + (5000 + 10)

Turn the Calculator Upside Down :)

Now if that dedication to winning doesn’t deserve a prize then I don’t know what does! And, yeah, it does work…I tried it.

Anyway, I’ll send an e-mail to those of you that have won, and if you could reply to it with the address you’d like your prizes sent to, I’ll get them despatched forthwith. Well done to everyone that entered and when next I have freebies to give away, I’ll let you know.

In other news, I’ll be in London on the 8th of November to sign advance copies of Mechanicum, the latest novel in the Horus Heresy series. If you can make it to the big smoke on that day, I’ll be at Games Workshop Brent Cross between 12 noon and 1pm, before making my way to the heart of London and the Plaza Games Workshop store in Oxford Street for a 3pm to 5pm signing. Hope to see you there.

And if you’ll permit me a little moment of preening here, I’ve recently learned that my Time of Legends novel, Heldenhammer, has been nominated for the David Gemmell Legend Award for Fantasy. Which is fantastic news and a real honour. To be nominated for an award that bears the name of the man who inspired me to become a writer and whose influence has guided me over the years is simply awesome and I’m inordinately pleased by this. Voting on this award is done by a panel of judges and a reader judge who’ll be chosen on the website (http://gemmellaward.com) so keep an eye out for this. Voting runs from the 26th of December this year to March 09, but don’t worry, I’ll remind you all of this closer to the time! Looking at the competition, I don’t expect to win it, but maybe, just maybe, if all my friends out there join in and give me their support…

Anyway, I’m going to sign off for now, as I’ve got Chapter 3 of the next Uriel novel to get busy on.

Talk to you all soon.

Graham.

I made such an arse of myself at work while procrastinating and generally misusing the computer at work....needless to say I jumped around like a mad thing and laughed with glee when I found out.....and a work colleague tried to crudely dissect that fact that I won as being some sort of fix simply because Mr. McNeill knows who am I.

Needless to say, I was deeply annoyed with him for suggesting such a thing (even more annoyed with him than usual because of his general crappy attitude towards me and my views/thoughts/opinions) but just shrugged and said to myself 'You can stick the thought of borrowing any more BL books from me!'

Anyhoo.....I'm completely over the moon at the thought that I actually won and can't wait to read the graphic novels, despite the fact it'll take brute force, ignorance and the possible altering of the law of physics to get them into said bookcase....but I'll manage!

And I've already booked the weekend of the 8th Nov off and I'm possibly going to stay with my older sibling so, unlike with Legion, I'm not going to be late to the signing and nearly fall flat on my face after nearly tripping over my own feet in the doorway of the GW Plaza after sprinting the Oxford Circus because I'd gone in the wrong direction the first time.

So I'll be less flustered and less horizontal than last time and with an older sibling in tow.

YAY!

Wow, I do sound like some crazed stalker now, don't I?

Bugger!

And Congrats on getting nominated for an award!

Bah, Xhalax only won because she has the real Graham McNeill tied up in her basement, next to Dan Abnett chained to a typewriter.

:D

Congrats to all winners. Good luck with the award Graham, hopefully you'll get the recognition you deserve (damn, why didn't i try flattery before the competition ended!).

Andy.

Congrats on the nomination Graham!

Andy.

I so do not have them chained up in my basement.

They're actually in cages in my loft space.

Bugger, I wasn't supposed to say that.

Oh well, you live and learn.

Herr Mcneil.

Congrats for being nominated for the David Gemmell Award for Fantasy Writers.

It just shows that your literature quality is growing with each passing year and that you're accepted as one of the better writers in the fantasy genre.

Although I must admit you've got a lot of tough competition.

Mike Lee's Nagash seemed to have been more positively received than Heldenhammer and there's also Andrzej Sapkowski's 'Blood of Elves' seriously man this guy is a wicked fantasy author...

He's famed for creating The Witcher Universe (you might have heard of the rpg game of the same name for PC) and has sold more of his novels in Poland than Stephen King did. Only recently his work has finally started to be translated to English.

I've got the first english translated novel. It is a short story anthology of his called 'The Last Wish'. I highly suggest reading it. His vampires are just plain fu**** up and elves are so unelfish. Very unique fantasy setting and Geralt, The Witcher, is definately one of the best written fantasy anti-heroes of all time.

I still haven't read Heldenhammer or Nagash yet so I'm not sure I'll be voting. I feel it would be wrong in doing so without having read the novels first but I'm still going to wish you the best of luck man :)

Hi Graham,

I'm from the Netherlands and a big fan of your writing, and especially of your book Fulgrim. Very nice work. I'm also starting with the Uriel ventris series, reading Nightbringer.

Your books, and those of other great Black Library writers give me strenght in my life and make me want to be good at my work, just like the astartes in so many books want to be. Recently, my girlfriend broke up with me, so I'm having a bad time right now. But the books from the warhammer 40.000 universe give me strenght, and for that I want to thank you and all the other black library writers. All did a great job.

Reading the emotional pages in the book Fulgrim about his decision to follow Horus and also about his first battle with ferrus manus, gives me strenght in these hard days. Those scenes are very emotional, very beatifull written. As are the pages by Ben Counter about the battle of the mournival and the dead of Torgaddon in galaxy in flames.

I have 2 questions :

Is there a possibility that Solomon Demeter ( my favourite character )may show up in another novel, wich takes us a back in time ? Some characters showed up in a lot of different books, so I would be very delighted if Demeter shows up once more.

The second question is : will there be space marines involved in the mechanicum book and do they have an important role in this book ? Imperial fists ? And are there any primarches in this book ?

I would be very greatfull if you would answer these questions, if possible of course.

Wish you all the best,

Bastiaan Vergoossen.

Wahey!

My books arrived this morning, and although I've only had a quick flick through of both of them.....I'm very very impressed.

The artwork is wonderful.

Will let you know my exact and specific thoughts about them once I've read them and got my computer back from my dad and his car insurance hunt.

Thanks again Mr. McNeill!
